Portland company first signed on to the project 10 years ago; Netflix plans to start streaming it Dec. 9.

Some theaters will be showing the stop-motion animation musical movie, and we'll alert readers to local screenings when we hear about them.

There have been some private screenings this week in Portland, but, clearly, Netflix has geared up to present the movie for its subscribers in three weeks.

ShadowMachine has been well-known for some time, having made the likes of "BoJack Horseman" and "Robot Chicken," as well as "Final Space" and "Tuca & Bertie."

Co-founders/co-owners Alex Bulkley and Carey Campodonico co-produced "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" and, according to publicists, have been working on a reboot of MTV's "Clone High," by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, for HBO Max.

"Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" tells the classic children's fairy tale of the wooden puppet that transforms into a real living boy and mends the heart of woodcarver Geppetto, with a darker take: It takes place in 1930s Italy, beset by fascism, and Pinocchio is a mean trickster.

It stars the voices of Ewan McGregor (as Sebastian J. Cricket), David Bradley (as Geppetto), Gregory Mann (as Pinocchio), Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, John Turturro, Burn Gorman and Tim Blake Nelson. It's written by del Toro and Patrick McHale.

Del Toro originally announced the idea in 2008, but development problems persisted. Four years later, ShadowMachine signed on to the project. In 2017, studios opted not to finance the movie, leading to Netflix's purchase of the rights.

Along with ShadowMachine, filming took place in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Bulkley and Campodonico grew up together in San Francisco Bay Area of California, played in a garage band together and built the company.

ShadowMachine expanded to its location on Northwest 21st Avenue from its headquarters in Los Angeles about seven years ago.

"What attracted us to Portland was the talent pool. We knew there was some incredible artists here for storyboarding and designing," Bulkley told the Tribune in 2018. "The state of Oregon has been really receptive with its (tax) incentives program. It's been very effective in how we compete among other studios.

"And, it's a beautiful West Coast city that has an undeniable quality of life, an antidote to New York or Los Angeles, a great place to raise your family and have a career in filmmaking."

"BoJack Horseman" has been on Netflix, while ShadowMachine had earlier passed on production of "Robot Chicken," a mainstay on Cartoon Network, to another company.

ShadowMachine has TV, commercial, film and music video projects. Among the other past and present shows are "Final Space" (TBS), "The Shivering Truth" (Adult Swim), "Highly Gifted" (Snapchat), "Jeff & Some Aliens" (Comedy Central), "Mary Shelley's Frankenhole" (Adult Swim), "Greatest Party Stories Ever" (MTV), "Titan Maximum" (Cartoon Network), "Triptank" (Comedy Central), "Moral Orel" (Cartoon Network) and "Dallas & Robo" (YouTube Red).
