SUBMITTED PHOTO - Fern KavanaghThis very special lady passed away Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022 at Cascade Terrace Nursing Center, Portland, Ore. Marlene was born in Portland on March 20, 1932 to Henry and Fern Kohl. She attended Sellwood Grade School then graduated from Cleveland High School in 1950. Shortly thereafter she went to work for Package Containers, Inc., which at that time was situated directly under the old Sellwood Bridge. It was there she met and eventually married, Richard Kavanagh. Her two sons, Kenneth and Michael, attended Marysville Grade School in the Mt. Scott neighborhood where Marlene served as PTA president and worked briefly as a teacher's aide under a federally funded program. She also supervised the many neighborhood children who enjoyed the home and extra lot the couple purchased in 1962. Marlene was a bit strict but always very fair and kids loved her. More than one said they wanted to join the household!

She loved the many family visits to the Oregon coast, especially during whale-watching periods. Yachats and Waldport were her favorite spots when the boys were young. In later years, Lincoln City down to Depoe Bay offered more adult options.

Included among those mourning her passing are her husband of 64 years, Richard, her two sons, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister and two brothers.

There will be no funeral services and a private interment.

A celebration of Life will be held at a time to be determined. Any memorial donations can be directed to The Oregon Humane Society.
