Latest results show Savas 57% of the vote to Ford's 43% in race for commission position 2

PMG FILE PHOTOS - Paul Savas and Libra Forde are battling for position 2 of the Clackamas County Board of Commission. Paul Savas currently leads Libra Forde in the race for Clackamas County Board of Commissioners position 2.

The latest results posted at 5 p.m. Wednesday show Savas with 57% of the vote to Ford's 43% after 108,107 votes were counted.

Forde is the executive director of the Women's Foundation of Oregon and a member of the North Clackamas School Board. If elected, she would be the first Black person to serve on the commission.

Savas, who owned an auto repair shop prior to his political career, was first elected to the commission in 2010. His third term expires at the end of this year.

"It looks pretty promising in my race so I'm excited to get back to work," Savas told Pamplin Media. "I'm looking forward to getting a grip on the challenges facing the county like the budget and homelessness."

Though the county commission positions are officially non-partisan, the current makeup of the board is considered a 3-2 majority for conservatives. If elected, along with incumbent Sonya Fischer in the race for position 5, Forde could tilt the board toward a more liberal majority.

"Regardless of the outcome, I know our campaign has made a real impact in this county," Forde said in a written statement to Pamplin Media Group. "It's not easy running as a Black woman in Clackamas County, but we definitely showed the doubters it's possible."

This is the first general election under Oregon's new ballot postmark law. Traditionally, ballots had to have been received by 8 p.m., Election Day in order to be counted, but this year, Oregon will count all ballot postmarked by 8 p.m., Election Day, so long as they are received within seven days of the election. Oregon's elections have largely been settled within hours of polls closing, but elections experts believe some tight races this year may take days to declare a winner.
