The special edition Mustang commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Steve McQueen movie with the famous chase scene.

PORTLAND TRIBUNE JEFF ZURSCHMEIDE - The 2019 Bullitt Mustang is painted in the same Dark Highland Green color as the original movie car. It includes the 5.0-liter V8 from the Mustang GT with even more power. It was 50 years ago this month that Steve McQueen gave movie audiences the ride of their lives in "Bullitt." The movie was mostly forgettable, but the epic car chase scene between the bad guys in a Dodge and McQueen in a deep green Ford Mustang has become cinematic legend.

To commemorate McQueen's performance, Ford has produced special "Bullitt" edition Mustangs three times. Bullitt editions were made in 2001, 2008, and now 2019. Bullitt editions are not the most powerful Mustangs you can buy, but they're definitely hotter than a standard Mustang GT. They're also painted in the same Dark Highland Green color as the original movie car.

PORTLAND TRIBUNE: JEFF ZURSCHMEIDE - The Bullitt comes with a good tech package, including a nice stereo with a touchscreen infotainment interface. The white cue-ball shift knob is another salute to the original movie car.

This year's Bullitt Edition is the best one yet. It comes with the 5.0-liter V8 engine from the Mustang GT, but with some special additions like the air intake system from the Mustang GT350 racing model. With some creative engine computer programming, Ford added 20 horsepower to the Bullitt edition, yielding 480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Another thing to know about Bullitt Mustangs is that they're all equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, high performance Brembo brakes, and a Torsen limited slip differential. With all that, top speed on a 2019 Bullitt is 163 MPH, and it will go from 0-60 in about 4.1 seconds.

There are just a few options to select with the Bullitt, and those are worth mentioning. You can opt for Recaro racing-style seats, or the standard Mustang GT seats. The Recaros would be good for racetrack use, but they're hard and tight. The Mustang GT seats are delightfully comfortable, and well suited to street and highway driving. You can also choose Ford's MagneRide magnetic shock absorber package, and this is definitely worth the extra money. MagneRide gives you a driving experience that is smooth but firm, especially on a curvy road.

The Bullitt comes with a good tech package, including a nice stereo with a touchscreen infotainment interface. There's an optional electronics package that includes a B&O Play premium sound system. The front seats are both heated and cooled, and the steering wheel is heated as well.

On the road, the Bullitt Mustang has a lot of power, but it's easily controlled. The Bullitt handles hills and curves like a much smaller car, but all that engine power is there if you want it. One last nice touch to mention is the white cue-ball shift knob, which is another salute to the original movie car. The new Bullitt retails at $47,590, and with MagneRide it's $49,285. If you want a beautiful, well-balanced sports car, the 2019 Mustang Bullitt edition is a great choice.
