The World of Speed racing museum in Wilsonville has launched a major exhibit honoring Porsche's legendary 911 sports car. The exhibit will be on display until the end of 2018.

"We're celebrating 55 years of the 911, which was debuted in 1963 at the Frankfurt auto show," explains museum curator Ron Huegli. "There have been seven generations now of the 911."

The exhibit features everything from a stock original 911 coupe from 1967 to some of the wildest racing cars Porsche has ever produced. Among the cars collected for the exhibit is a rare Porsche 959. Just 345 were built to meet FIA racing standards to qualify the 959 as a legitimate production model. When it was introduced, the 959 was the world's fastest street-legal production car, achieving speeds up to 211 miles per hour.

Also on display is local racer Monte Shelton's personal 911 race car, in which he won several Rose Cup race victories at Portland International Raceway.

"I work hard to get these cars," Huegli admits. "I reach out to the owners, and they're really excited to be a part of this."

Virtually all the Porsches in the exhibit are on loan from private collections.

"We just had our three year anniversary," Huegli observes. "I think we've developed a pretty good reputation as a nice museum that treats the cars well and displays them in a very beautiful light. So it's been easy to get these cars compared to the previous exhibits."

The World of Speed is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum opens an hour early at 9 AM on Saturdays. Adult admission is $10, children 6-12 are $5. Senior, student, and military discounts are available.
