2018 Infiniti QX80 is a full-size luxury experience
We've reviewed several Infiniti products lately and the common factor in all of them is first-class luxury. As Nissan's upscale brand, Infiniti cuts no corners when it comes to materials, workmanship, and good decisions about what technology and features to put into its cars and SUVs. Infiniti's flagship full-size SUV is a showcase for everything luxury buyers are seeking.
The first thing is that the QX80 is big. It weighs nearly three tons and you have to climb up into it. With three rows of seats, the standard configuration seats seven passengers, but you can order a second-row bench seat to accommodate eight people if you need that space. The second and third rows fold down at the touch of a button at the back of the cargo area, giving you up to 95.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
As mentioned, the interior is top quality luxury. Top-grain leather is standard, with optional semi-aniline leather. Don't worry if that means nothing to you. I had to look it up. Semi-aniline leather is softer, and more stain resistant, which is good in a vehicle. But that's indicative of what you get in the QX80. Front seats are heated and cooled, second row seats are heated. Everything is power-adjustable and when you turn the QX80 off, the driver's seat slides back and the steering wheel retracts for easy entry and exit.
The QX80 also comes with a full complement of tech features. You get an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment interface with your choice of the standard 13-speaker Bose audio system, or the optional 15-speaker Bose system. It sounds good. Basic safety gear is standard on the QX80, but be aware that you have to buy the optional Driver Assistance Package to get the latest safety goodies like backup collision intervention, blind spot and lane departure interventions, adaptive cruise control, and forward emergency braking. That's $2,900 well spent, but those features really should be standard in the modern world.
The QX80 drives like the full-size body-on-frame vehicle that it is. The 5.6-liter V8 engine delivers 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. Mated with the 7-speed automatic transmission, performance is excellent. Another option pack worth the extra money is the $5,700 Deluxe Technology Package, which includes the upgraded Bose audio, the semi-aniline leather, adaptive front lighting, and a hydraulic body motion control system which keeps the QX80 firm and stable in curves.
The bottom line on the 2018 Infiniti QX80 is that if you're shopping full-size luxury SUVs, the shopping list is pretty short. Infiniti's top SUV definitely competes with the best from Range Rover, Lexus, Cadillac, GMC, Mercedes-Benz, and Lincoln. Both on features and price, the Infiniti QX80 is well worth your consideration.
