Washington Elementary student wins 400-meter state championship

by: EVELING PARSONS - Seven-year-old Joaquin Parsons celebrates his Junior Olympic State Championship medal in the 400-meter-dash.Woodburn’s next big track and field star may be at Washington Elementary School, as 7-year-old Joaquin Parsons won the 400-meter state championship at the Oregon Association 2014 Junior Olympic State Championship at Willamette University on June 21.

Parsons took home the first place medal with a time of 1:19.14 in the eight and under division to qualify for the Regional USATF junior olympic championship in Spokane, Wash., on Friday and Saturday. The event in Washington gives Parsons a chance to move on to the Junior Olympic National competition in Houston on July 22.

Parsons also took home a second-place finish in the 200-meter finals with a time of 33.99, shaving more than a half second off his preliminary time of 34.50.

He rounded out his day in the 100, where he placed fifth in the finals with a time of 16.37
