At 8:57 a.m., Marion County deputies responded to a crash on River Road Northeast south of Waconda Road Northeast.

Preliminary investigation revealed that an SUV, driven by Michael Bashaw, 18, of Salem, was traveling north on River Road when it turned to make a delivery, cutting into the path of the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist, Robert Grove, 69, of Newberg, died at the scene.

Bashaw was not injured.

River Road was closed between Waconda and Brooklake Road Northeast for several hours Thursday morning.

Deputies said this is still an active investigation and there are no additional details to release at this time.

Just moments later, another vehicle on Cordon Road in Salem made a left turn in front of a motorcycle, sending its 90-year-old driver to the hospital, where he later died.

On Highway 219 early in the evening on the same day, another motorcyclist was killed when he, for unknown reasons, swerved into oncoming traffic.

With three motorcyclist deaths within 12 hours, the Marion County Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents that the summer months bring extra traffic on roadways including motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. MCSO encourages all residents and visitors to practice being attentive drivers and to watch for others.
