Tualatin kayaker reported missing from Seaside Estuary
Emergency personnel as well as the U.S. Coast Guard are looking for a Tualatin man who went missing from the mouth of the Seaside Estuary while crabbing in a kayak Jan. 1.
Matthew Manley, 42, was reported missing to Seaside police at 2:45 p.m. on New Year's Day, beginning a search by both the police and Seaside Fire and Rescue who were unable to locate the man.
In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard assisted by sweeping the area in a helicopter during the day and launched a boat overnight in search of Manley. The Coast Guard deployed both its Sector Columbia River Helicopter crews and 47-foot motor lifeboats on rotation from Station Cape Disappointment to aid in the search.
The city of Seaside reminds those recreating in and around open waters to use caution because water temperatures are near 50 degrees this time of year and can result in hypothermia in a very short time. Officials suggest letting someone know if you are planning to be around the water and to be equipped with a flotation device.
