City will negotiate to have Portland-based company operate program
The Portland Bureau of Transportation has agreed to negotiate a contract with Portland-based Alta Bicycle Share to operate the citys planned public bike-sharing system. Alta was one of three companies that responded to the citys request for proposals to operate the system.
Regional leaders earlier approved the use of $2 million in federal transportation funds to launch the system.
Bike-sharing systems allow people to easily hop on a rental bike and ride it to another in the city for a small fee, encouraging the expansion of bicycle use for short trips, tourism and other purposes.
Alta, part of a bicycling consulting firm with offices in multiple cities, manages bike sharing systems in eight other U.S. cities.
