KORT CHIROPRACTIC & CONCUSSION CARE - Russell Kort, DCFor the past year, I have written numerous articles about concussions and collisions.

I have listed many adverse effects related these types of injuries. Symptoms such as loss of balance, focus, energy, sensitivity to light and sound, slips in eye movements, digestive issues, depression, anxiety, headaches, migraines, neck and back pain, and so much more.

In the past year, something amazing has happened in my practice. We have developed protocols that have changed the way I treat patients.

By looking at brain function, we are better able to treat dysfunction in the body. This has dramatically shortened the duration of our treatment and your recovery.

I call this concept “Time Compression,” a shortened amount of time people are under my care.

This is achieved by focusing on all that is skewed in the patient’s system and addressing the source of the condition, from the brain and gut to balance and the spine.

It is this comprehensive, whole-body approach that is changing the way our patients see chiropractic. At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we are committed to learning why you’re not feeling well, then giving you proper focused treatment and strategies to enhance your life and your whole-body health.

Call our office today to schedule an appointment for a complimentary consultation.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - Dr. C. Todd WilsonThis Holiday season, take time to reflect on the ways you are blessed in your lives. Enjoy spending time with your family and loved ones, as that time is precious above all.

As we move forward into the New Year, be sure to acknowledge the people who make sacrifices on your behalf. And, importantly, ponder the ways that you might return to those who give to you.

I am ever grateful to the Sherwood community for being a part of my practice’s family. It is a great honor and a privilege to have been entrusted with providing orthodontic care to so many over the years.

As such, I have always believed that providing orthodontic care is only part of my responsibility. A big part of my obligation as a professional is to give back to the community. That I do by supporting a multitude of community events, school fundraising efforts, athletics, the arts, and more.

Our Rewards Program also emphasizes this, offering kids points for participating in community service.

Each year I provide free orthodontic treatment to a number of people who have high orthodontic need but who otherwise could not afford treatment. This is one of my most rewarding endeavors, witnessing the positive changes this brings in the form of improved health and self-image.

I recognize how others help me, and I strive to give back. I encourage us all to look for more opportunities to ‘pay it forward’ in the coming year. Happy Holidays!

NEW SMILES DENTAL - Dentists Nathan Doyel, Benjamin Aanderud and Richard McKinney. Are you one of the many Americans who don’t seek dental care because you don’t have dental insurance?

Having healthy teeth and gums can affect your self-esteem, how well you eat and sleep and even affects your overall health. Unfortunately, most dental insurance plans have a maximum yearly benefit of $1,000, which hasn’t changed since the 1960s!

That means that your dental premiums probably only cover routine cleanings, fluoride and X-rays, which leaves you to pay entirely out of pocket for any other treatment. And that’s only if you’re one of the 64% of Americans who have dental insurance through your employer.

While we accept most dental insurance plan payments at New Smiles, we’ve also seen the need for an alternative. As open-enrollment season for dental insurance approaches, we’d like to offer our patients the option of our New Smiles Dental Membership.

At New Smiles, we offer membership plans that are comparable to the cost of most group dental plans. For example, a basic membership is only around $30/month and will cover twice-yearly exams, cleaning and X-rays, an emergency exam, a smile consultation and 15% off ALL other dental procedures, including cosmetic procedures with NO maximum benefit!

Don’t let inadequate dental insurance prevent your family from getting the care that you need. This upcoming year, consider New Smiles Dental Membership as an alternative to your current plan. Call our office today at 503-925-9595 for more information.

KORT CHIROPRACTIC AND CONCUSSION CARE - Russell J. Kort, D.C.In recent articles, I have written about concussions and the effects they have on the brain.

Balance issues are common side effects of a concussion. These symptoms are most noticeable when our eyes are closed. Think about it. How often do you blink per day? The average is 28,800 times. However, if you are experiencing sensitivity to light or sound, that number could be much higher.

Balance is the key to life, and if your balance is altered with every blink of your eyes, your quality of life will be compromised. Falls are one of the top five causes of death of people over 50.

Most of us take balance for granted. Imagine for a second if every time you blink you thought you were falling. Do you think the muscles of your neck and back will be loose and relaxed? NOT A CHANCE!

People with balance issues are plagued with neck and back issues. This is because the brain is working constantly to stabilize them against the ravages of gravity.

If the source of the problem is not addressed, then the problem will never go away.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we have unique and proven solutions for balance and other brain and spinal issues.

Dr. Kort is the pioneering physician utilizing Acoustic Brain Body Exercise as a fundamental treatment program to improve and enhance the lives of those we touch.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - Dr. C. Todd WilsonAs time passes, as a society, we are placing more and more value on having straight, cosmetically ideal teeth. That is not a bad thing for sure. It is definitely more the norm than the exception to have braces now.

In the not-far-distant past, your dentist was more likely to dismiss your orthodontic needs as “cosmetic” or “optional.” I treat a lot of adult patients who were told they did not need braces as kids. In more recent times, dentists are much more aware of the long-term benefits of having orthodontic treatment and are much more likely to recommend it.

But what exactly is the benefit? Is it just about having straight teeth?

Definitely not. In fact, I recommend treatment for primarily bite-related, or functional reasons. Cosmetics are sort of a side effect, if you will, of having the teeth aligned in the proper bite position.

An orthodontist is trained to place your teeth in proper position in the bite, down to fractions of a millimeter. This is important as the enamel of your teeth, though super-strong, is weaker under certain types of forces. In general, having a proper bite will lead to less wear on your teeth, less dental work over time, less tendency for periodontal disease and healthier jaw joints.

Is it OK to want braces just to get your teeth straight? Sure! But be sure to also consider the health benefits to your teeth and jaw structures.

WILSON ORTHODONTICS - C. Todd Wilson, DDSAs we approach Thanksgiving each year I, like many of you, take time to reflect on what I’m thankful for.

First, I am thankful for all of you who have been a part of my practice family over the past 15 years. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to provide orthodontic care for you. I take great pride in what I do, and it’s very gratifying to see all of those beautiful smiles out in the community.

My gratitude for this opportunity motivates me to continue to give back to the community by sponsoring community events, school fundraisers, athletics, the arts, and the list goes on.

Second, it is extremely important to me that you have a positive experience as members of my practice family. This is an area I understand can always be improved upon, and we constantly strive to do better.

It stands to reason that a practice that has focused on providing excellent care and treating people with kindness and respect would get very busy over time. This presents ongoing challenges.

I want to make sure that we are always meeting your expectations in this regard, so I encourage honest and ongoing feedback. I don’t take it lightly that you have choices as to providers. My goal is to provide the best possible care with the best possible outcome in every situation.

Thanks again to all of you. At the end of the day, for me, it’s about treating others as I want to be treated.

KORT CHIROPRACTIC AND CONCUSSION CARE - Russell J. Kort, DCMy first career as an EMT-I on a paramedic unit helped me understand and evaluate injuries associated with auto collisions – an invaluable skill in my chiropractic career.

When you are involved in a collision, there are many forces exerted on your body. Forces such as seatbelts, air bags and other impacts to your car play a role in stopping your movement and creating injuries to you and your passengers.

Did you know that 17 percent of all concussions (TBIs) are the result of car accidents? We know that and therefore evaluate all MVA patients for concussions.

Many people involved in collisions are more concerned about the damage to their cars than damage to themselves.

STOP! Your vehicle saved your life. It did not prevent you from being injured. Urgent Care checks to see if you have any life-threatening injuries.

At Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care, we look past the obvious. We examine all aspects of your brain and body. With this information, we develop a comprehensive brain-body program to get you back on track.

The best part is, you’re covered by Oregon law for your care following a collision. This means your insurance company cannot tell you who you can see for treatment. In most cases, there are no out-of-pocket expenses to you and your occupants.

You owe it to yourself and your passengers to seek care from a physician who looks past the obvious.

It is this attention to detail that sets Kort Chiropractic and Concussion Care apart from the rest.

NEW SMILES DENTAL - Nathan Doyel, Benjamin Aanderud, Richard McKinneyDo you have headaches or grind your teeth at night?

A night guard is a great solution to those problems. But beware! Not all guards are created equal.

Mouth guards at department or sporting goods stores are primarily used and recommended during sports to protect the teeth from major injury. Softened in hot water at home, boil-and-bite mouth protectors are made from thermoplastic material and are then placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth. Because they are not designed for night use or to prevent grinding, they could do more harm than good.

Custom-fabricated mouth guards, called night guard appliances, are primarily worn at night. They are individually designed and prevent damage to teeth due to grinding and clinching, which many patients don’t even realize they do. Through an examination, our dentists will be able to diagnose whether a night guard would be beneficial by discussing your symptoms, such as sensitive teeth, headaches, jaw tightness and jaw popping or clicking and by noting if your teeth show wear patterns or signs of fracturing.

Night guards can help relax the muscles and stop costly damage to your teeth and jaw. An effective night guard should be comfortable, durable, easy to clean, and should not restrict breathing. The process is simple and takes a few minutes at two short visits.

Give us a call to find out more. Let’s lessen your pain, protect your teeth and help you get a better night’s sleep!
