Deer Creek students are very good at 'stuffing the bus'

They contribute hundreds of pairs of pajamas during fifth annual Caring Closet drive

by: BARBARA SHERMAN - SELFLESS GIVING - Deer Creek Elementary School counselor Dianne Wilson poses with some leadership students in front of the bus after all the PJs have been loaded. On April 25, students at Deer Creek Elementary participated in the fifth annual Stuff the Bus, an event to collect clothes, toiletries and other items for distribution through the Caring Closet to needy families in the Tigard-Tualatin School District.

This year Deer Creek students donated pajamas and held a contest to determine which class brought in the most items and won a pajama party.

As students in the marimba band were setting up the equipment in the drive-through in front of the school, one boy asked, “How is the bus going to get out of here?”

In 2010, three schools participated in the first Stuff the Bus, and by last year all 13 schools in the district joined in the effort. All the items were taken to Tigard High School for sorting before being stored.
