Mask & Mirror spring production focuses on one big 'happy' family

Meet some relatives who are only too easy to leave behind

Italian family life comes alive on May 2 as Mask & Mirror Community Theatre opens its final show of the 2013-2014 season, "Over the River and Through the Woods" by Joe DiPietro.

It is the story of the Cristano and Gianelli, grandparents in Hoboken, N.J., with the highlight of their week being the Sunday visit of their grandson for dinner - until he decides to accept a new job in some faraway land called Seattle!

Hilarity ensues as they try everything to keep him from moving - even including trying to marry him off to an Irish girl.

"I see some of myself in each of these characters, and I see my family," says Sarah Ominski, director of the play. "I instantly saw my grandparents and the influence they've had on my life over the years. I am thrilled to be able to bring these people to life on stage for everyone to enjoy.

“Each cast member has laughed and cried during rehearsals as they've shared stories about their grandparents brought to mind by our passionate Italian families."

"Over the River and Through the Woods" plays May 2 through May 18, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. on "The Stage" at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 10445 S.W. Canterbury Lane, Tigard.

Tickets cost $12 for adults; $10 for seniors, students and military; and $5 for children 10 and under.
