New Navy ship named after Rose City stops in Key West on its migration to commissioning cereomy on April 21.

CONTRIBUTED - Peter and Eileen Colwill sent this picture of the USS Portland in Key West to the Portland Tribune. The USS Portland — the first naval vessel named exclusively for the Rose City — recently docked in Key West, Florida, on its way to town, where it will be officially commissioned on April 21.

A San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship, also known as the LPD 27, the USS Portland left the Ingalls Shipbuilding yard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where it was built, on Dec. 15. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Astoria on Friday, April 13, and travel upriver to Terminal 2 at the Port of Portland, where the commissioning will take place the next day.

The USS Portland's keel was laid in August 2013. It was launched in February 2016, christened in May 2016, and completed builder's sea trials in July of this year. It stopped in Key West in late December after traveling through the Caribbean. Two visitors from the United Kingdom, Peter and Eileen Colwill, saw it docked where cruise ships normally tie up last Friday and sent a picture to Pamplin Media Group.

Ceremonies and events related to the commissioning will take place at Terminal 2 throughout the week between April 14 and April 21. Tickets are available at www.ussportlandlpd27.org.
