Three local showings have been scheduled for 'Priced Out: 15 Years of Gentrification in Portland, Oregon,' which documents changes in North and Northeast.

COURTESY CORNELIUS SWART - A scene of the changes on North Williams Avenue from 'Priced Out.'Five new local screenings have been scheduled for "Priced Out: 15 Years of Gentrification in Portland, Oregon," a locally-produced documentary on the effects of gentrification in North and Northeast Portland.

The documentary was produced and directed by Cornelius Swart, the former publisher of the St. Johns Sentinel community newspaper that closed in 2010. It is a sequel to "Northeast Passage," Swart's 2002 documentary on the same subject.

Both films show the intentional and unintentional effects of large public and private redevelopment projects on the historic home of the city's African-American community. Using historic records and archived film footage, the film dramatically presents the impacts of such projects as the Memorial Coliseum on the affected and surrounding neighborhorhoods. Most of the former residents have moved out, including Nikki Williams, a single mother featured in both documentaries.

In the first film, Williams, a home owner, welcomed the earliest stages of gentrification as improving her neighborhood, which was plagued with crime and neglected buildings. But 2015, however, Williams was distressed that so many other African Americans had been displaced by higher housing costs and largely replaced with younger and wealthier whites. Williams sold her house and moved to Dallas by the end of the second film.

"Priced Out" debuted to positive reviews before a sold out crowd on Nov. 1 at the Northwest Filmmaker's Festive. It has since been shown in Los Angeles and St. Louis. Now three new showing have been scheduled for Portland. They will be followed by question and answer periods with Swart and others.
