After a rash of gang violence that left a young mother dead and several others wounded in different parts of the city over the weekend in Portland, a community meeting called Enough is Enough was held Monday night.
Ervaeua Herring, 21, was shot inside her Eastwood Village apartment in Southeast Portlands Centennial Neighborhood around 5 a.m. on Sunday.
Earlier Sunday, three people were shot after a fight got out of control near Southwest 3rd and Ash in downtown Portland. The victims, all between 21 and 37, will survive.
And late Sunday, officers responded to Northgate Park after a shooting and stabbing on North Fessenden Street. One wounded man is expected to recover.
Police didnt say that incident was gang-related, but they did say they wouldnt be surprised.
The meeting Monday was packed with people, emotions and ideas to not only support the victims of violence, but also to stop it in the city for good.
What it is, is behavior related, said attendee Woody Broadnax. Its about somebody said something that somebody didnt like.
Broadnax said he fed-up with these get togethers. Rather, he wants to funnel more money into education to fix the problem. He clashed with leaders and eventually walked out on the meeting after leaders said support for victims families comes first.
This year, were roughly 20 gang-violence crimes above where we were last year at this time, 65 to about 85, said Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson. The issue is these cases are very hard to solve without witnesses coming forward.
Lucy Mashies sons 2009 murder is still unsolved.
The whole community knows who killed my son, but nobody will come forward because these cowards hold us hostage, said Mashie.
The group is working on six solutions to combat the violence. Among them, they want to offer counseling, hold community engagement walks and create a new message for the public.
As for Herring, she had a 1-year-old and was pregnant when she was shot, according to an autopsy conducted by the Oregon State Medical Examiner.
Officers said the shooting that killed her was gang-related although Herring wasnt a gang member. Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
