Winter weather conference Saturday

Forecasters to present predictions for coming months

Do you watch The Weather Channel instead of American Idol? Is your idea of gambling betting when precipitation records will fall? Did you plan this year’s family vacation around the presentations on the anniversary of the Columbus Day Storm?

Then don’t miss the 20th Annual Winter Weather Forecast Conference sponsored by the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorological Society. The free event is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the auditorium at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., in Portland.

Like the previous conferences, weather forecasters from around the region will predict the upcoming winter and review last year’s prognostications. A $300 Davis home weather station will also be raffled off to one lucky winner.

This year’s conference will feature opening remarks by Oregon AMS President Steve Pierce, an OMSI update by OMSI Planetarium Manager Jim Todd, and a review of the 2011-2012 weather season by KPTV/KPDX Chief Meteorologist Mark Nelsen.

Presenting their forecasts will be Clinton Rockey with the National Weather Service in Portland, Hydrologist and Meteorologist Kyle Dittmer with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, Climatologist and Meteorologist George Taylor with Applied Climate Services, and Meteorologist Jim Little with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

In addition, Jesse Nicola with Mount Hood Ski Bowl will make a special presentation titled, “Using NOAA XML data to design a ski resort forecast.”

Pierce says the OMSI auditorium holds approximately 300 people, so please arrive early in order to be assured a seat. Once standing room capacity has been met, the only additional viewing area will be from the hallway outside.
