Bits & Pieces: Chess dignitary

by: COURTESY OF ENTERTAINING VENTURES - Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi will visit Portland this weekend. The Ugandan junior chess champion — yes, you read it right — will visit Portland and talk about her inspiring story of chess, education and faith.

Phiona Mutesi’s story has been told in the book “The Queen of Katwe” (www.queenofkatwe.com) and soon will be made into a Disney movie. She learned the game from a Ugandan missionary growing up in the slums of Kampala and, despite not going to school consistently, has righted her life and plans to finish school and go to college.

Mutesi first visited the United States in 2012. This time she’ll be accompanied by her coach, Robert Katende, and during her Portland visit plans to meet and greet people at the City of Portland Chess Tournament (9 a.m. Saturday, April 19) at Floyd Light Middle School and tell her story at Rolling Hills Community Church in Tualatin (5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, and 9 and 11:15 a.m. Sunday, April 20). Mutesi and Katende will serve as the keynote presenters at the Game Changer luncheon at the Hilton Portland Hotel (noon Monday, April 21). The Game Changer event is a fundraiser for Success for Chess programs and to help build a chess academy as part of a new education complex in Kampala.

Mutesi and Katende will speak to the staff of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle on April 24 as their U.S. tour continues.
