High shooting percentage and low turnovers gave the Vikings the advantage over a trigger-happy Jefferson

PIONEER PHOTO: CONNER WILLIAMS - Colton senior James Parker sets up the offense during the Vikings' loss to Pleasant Hill on Dec. 27. Colton's boys' basketball team is 1-0 in PacWest Conference play after beating Jefferson 57-41 in their home matchup last week.

The Vikings took a 27-14 lead at the half, and then after the Lions won the third quarter 16-12, Colton rebounded and took the fourth 18-11 to secure the win.

The Viks boasted very solid shooting percentages as they went 40 percent from the field, including 50 percent for two-pointers and 21 percent from beyond the arc. That, coupled with a fairly low amount of turnovers and 13 steals, allowed them to cruise away from the Lions.

"I think we worked [well] as a team and played our roles," senior Evan Rasor said. "We used every opportunity on offense to get a good look to score."

Jefferson, on the other hand, took shot after shot and couldn't seem to find their rhythm, as they shot 28 percent from the field and only made three of 29 three-point attempts. And though they just barely won the rebound game (40 compared to Colton's 39), the Viks won the defensive rebound match with 27 compared to the Lions' 22.

Colton continued to use their speed and ball handling skills to push the temp, which Rasor said works well for them because they are a small team overall.

But the Viks do have some good size in junior Javontae Maes and senior Kreygan Raasch, and if they want to see success late in the season, they'll need to continue to develop their big men.

Up next for the Viks is an away game at Blanchet Catholic (10-2, 2-0 PacWest Conference) on Tuesday, and then a home matchup against Scio (4-9, 1-1 PWC) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
