The Pacers beat Sherwood and push Newberg in their 2017 TRL season-opening meet

REVIEW PHOTO: MILES VANCE - Lakeridge freshman Holly Lane heads to victory against Newberg and Sherwood at Sherwood High School on Wednesday.Facing one of the Three Rivers League's best teams in its 2017 TRL opener, the Lakeridge girls cross country team held its own.

The Pacers, facing both Newberg and Sherwood at Sherwood High School on Wednesday, showed they could run with the TRL's best, falling to the Tigers just 26-31 and beating the Lady Bowmen 27-28. Newberg beat Sherwood 24-31 in the day's other dual meet.

"We all were like 'We're going to do super good like we always do. Guys, we're going to crush it,'" said Lakeridge freshman Holly Lane, who won the event with a finishing time of 20 minutes, 1.5 seconds.

"I think we all did really well. I think we all (set personal records) or nearly got PR's," added Pacer junior Cleo Cowie, who finished fourth overall at 20:55.6.

The Pacers pushed Newberg to the limit on Wednesday, speeding through the fast, mostly flat Sherwood layout to record solid times throughout their lineup. The rest of Lakeridge's varsity scorers included: junior Abbi Outcalt, seventh at 21:39.6; senior Amber Miller, 14th at 22:06.6; and freshman Sofia Marin-Quiros, 18th at 22:52.0.

Lane, who won the first TRL race of her young high school career, was thrilled with her efforts.

"I wanted to get in the lower twenties, which I think I did, so that's good because my last one was 20:55 so I think I achieved my goal," she said.

Further, she beat Newberg's Abigail Hein (second at 20:05.2) and Savanna Salmons (third at 20:07.6) — runners who had finished ahead of her earlier in the year.

"My coaches told me that that two girls who I was running with, they were ahead of me in the last race so I wanted to keep up with them," Lane said. "Once I knew I was with them, I was like 'I must be going faster than my last race.' I passed them right on that back stretch. It's just how it worked out."

Cowie also set a personal record at Sherwood and explained her affection for the layout.

"They changed the course a little bit and I think I like it better," she said. "I think I ran my PR, which is really nice because it's early in the season."

Sherwood's top finishers were Joley Sproul (fifth at 20:57.4) and Brooke Smith, sixth at 21:20.9.

Next up, the Pacers run against St. Mary's and West Linn at Mary S. Young State Park on Wednesday, with the varsity girls race set for 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys race for 6 p.m. On Sept. 27, the Pacers host Tigard and Canby at Lakeridge High School, with the varsity girls race set for 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys race for 6 p.m.
