No reason to vote against Garrett in House 38 race

When is a race really not a race? In the case of the two Lake Oswego candidates “running” for House 38, a family tragedy effectively curtailed the political aspirations of one of them: Republican Tom Maginnis.

Lynne Maginnis, the candidate’s wife, died on June 14, and Tom Maginnis, even prior to that, had effectively shut down his campaign. We realize what a painful period this was for him and his family and completely understand the reasons his campaign was thwarted.

It’s too bad because Maginnis brings a spirit of competitiveness and strong business ideas to the table. Under better circumstances, we would like to see him run again for public office.

Still, the fact remains that incumbent Chris Garrett, a Democrat first elected in 2009, has done a good job in representing this district, which includes Lake Oswego and a portion of Southwest Portland.

Because of how this race played out, we endorse Garrett for another term as the state representative for Oregon’s 38th District.
