LOJ play is 'Earnest'

by: SUBMITTED GRAPHIC - Lake Oswego Junior High's production of 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is on tap next week.Editor’s note: This story gives away the ending to “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Who is this Earnest guy, and what’s so important about him?

Attending Lake Oswego Junior High School’s production next week, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” would clear up any confusion about Oscar Wilde’s iconic comedic play, set in England in the 1890s.

The protagonist’s name is actually Ernest, not Earnest. Well, not at first. Justice of the peace and landowner Jack Worthing — also an eligible bachelor — creates an imaginary, pleasure-seeking, trouble-making little brother, Ernest. The short of it is the woman he loves likes the name, he discovers it actually is his name and Jack/Ernest learns honesty is the best practice: “I’ve now realized for the first time in my life the vital ‘Importance of Being Earnest.’”

The LOJ play is broken up into two casts, so check the drama program’s website, which has a list of cast members’ names, to make sure you’re picking the proper showing. The silver cast performs 7 p.m. May 16 and May 17, and the green cast performs 7 p.m. May 15 and 2 p.m. May 17. General admission is $10, and LOJ is located at 2500 Country Club Road. School drama productions are funded entirely by ticket sales, drama teacher Joe Theissen said.
