St. Josef's Winery celebrates 40 years of great grape growing
For The Review, Tidings
This April, St. Josef's Winery Founder's Day will be celebrating its 40th anniversary celebration with festivities on April 7 and 8.
Long before Oregon's drinking culture included gourmet coffees, exotic spirits and world-renowned wines, there was St. Josef's — a small winery located just outside Canby.
St. Josef's Winery planted its first vintage in 1978, when Oregon wine making was considered more of an anomaly and a hobby, rather than a viable industry.
In 40 years, Oregon has become the nation's fourth-largest wine producer growing from 25 wineries to more than 700.
Recently, Wine Spectator magazine named the Willamette Valley the Number One wine region in the world. The New York Times called it the "most exciting place to make wine in the world."
St. Josef's takes the concept of family-owned to a new level — the winery is named after founder and winemaker Josef Fleischmann, the sparkling wines (Lilli Sparkling Chardonnay, Lilli Sparkling Rosé) are named after his wife, Lilli and the Kitara vineyard is named after their two children Kirk and Tara.
Tara McKnight underscored Oregon's current world image versus the early years.
"I remember at a father-daughter dance in high school I asked my father not to mention that we were winemakers because I was embarrassed," said McKnight. "Now I'm the president of an award-winning winery and very proud of it."
Portland band Gypsy Jazz Project will be featured along with wine tours and the winery's homemade Hungarian goulash. There will also be a new spring wine release.
Located outside Canby, the winery is easily accessible via Interstate 5 and Highway 99E. The winery will be open daily during the month of April from noon to 5 p.m.
The St Josef's Day Festival hours are noon to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday April 7 and 8, with music from 1-5 p.m. Tasting and admission including souvenir glass and tour is $10 for those over 21.
St Josef's is located at 28836 S Barlow Road, Canby. Call 503-651-3190 or visit stjosefswinery.com.
