Attend lecture, original production at Lewis & Clark

Attend a noise lecture

Hillel Schwartz will present "The Noise of Almost Nothing," a lecture focusing on the cultural history of noise on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Frank Manor House on the Lewis and Clark campus.

Schwartz is a poet, translator and independent scholar. His most recent work, “Making Noise: From Babel to the Big Bang and Beyond,” was published October 2011. The work focuses on the cultural history of noise in the West including examinations of urban noise, voices, folklore, hearing loss, isolation and noise control.

Schwartz describes this talk as “an exploration in word, music and image across three centuries and three continents of that which is (almost) inaudible and therefore incredibly noisy.”

The lecture is free. For more information, contact the English department at 503-768-7405.

Attend a new theater piece

“Failure to Communicate,” an original new theater piece created by the Lewis and Clark Theatre Department, will be presented Nov. 2-3 and Nov. 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. The production is inspired by the American film classic “Cool Hand Luke.”

The production re-imagines the settling into a totalitarian society that locks up its citizens when they “speak out of place” in work camps where they can “get their mind right.” In one of these camps a new woman comes in and shakes up the docile obedient inmates and creates a small but vital revolution demanding self-worth and freedom from the guards.

The play replaces the lead roles with women and finds new texts from across the history of the worldwide struggle for civil and human rights to create a lively song and movement filled story about human dignity.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for Lewis and Clark faculty, staff, alums, seniors and students. Lewis and Clark students are admitted for $5.

The play will be presented on the main stage of Fir Acres Theatre on campus.
