The Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) chose Sunset High School freshman Jacqueline Brown as the winner of the 2014 Teen Summer Reading Art Contest.

Brown’s design depicts a reader poring over the wondrous contents of a book, which captures this year’s theme: “Spark a Reaction.”

Brown will receive a $150 gift certificate for Powell’s Books and her art will appear on all countywide Teen Summer Reading publicity this summer.

This is the fifth consecutive year WCCLS has encouraged teens to capture the spirit of Summer Reading through their creative art. Thirty-five entries were submitted at the public libraries in Washington County during the months of January and February. In early March, a panel of teen librarians met to review feedback collected from local teen library councils and to select the winning piece.

Katie Fo of Southridge High School won second place, and Rebecca Dan of Glencoe High School received an honorable mention. Fo and Dan will receive gift cards for Dick Blick Art Materials.

The Summer Reading Program was designed to inspire kids and promote good learning habits. Summer Reading in Washington County begins June 1, when teens will be invited to sign up at their local public library to earn prizes for reading.
