Defense carries North team to all-star win

Centennial's Nick Clark makes a game-clinching play at linebacker

by: THE OUTLOOK: PARKER LEE - Centennials Nick Clark puts a tackle on South running back A.J. Hotchkins ending in a fumble late in the game. HILLSBORO – With the help of a few East County football stars from the Mt. Hood Conference, the North all-stars navigated through a turnover-riddled Les Schwab Bowl to top the South squad 31-21 on Saturday.

The two teams combined for 12 turnovers in the sloppy offensive bout, but the North made their takeaways more crippling. The North defense forced seven turnovers which led to 17 points, capped by two monumental plays in the final minutes.

The first came when Aloha’s Maurice McSwain intercepted a South pass and took it 35 yards for a touchdown, giving the North a 10-point lead with 2:26 remaining. On the ensuing South possession, Centennial’s Nick Clark got involved.

Clark waited patiently on the sideline for most of the game for his opportunity. When his time came, he took advantage. In the last minute, Clark drilled South running back A.J. Hotchkins with everything he had. The jarring hit knocked the ball free and the North recovered to ice the game.

“That was awesome. I was dreading that running back all week. When I saw him coming at me, I knew it was my chance,” Clark said. “It was amazing being able to make that play. I will remember that for a long time.”

Also contributing to the North’s productive day defensively was Gresham defensive end Ben Bachman. Bachman was on the field regularly and helped keep the South’s running game in check. The Southern Oregon University-commit recorded two solo tackles and three total tackles.
