The Cardinals challenge in the second set, but cant overcome Santiams tall front row

by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: MILES VANCE - Corbetts Karina Lees was named to the first-team, all-state squad. She had 13 kills in Saturdays title match.

EUGENE — Corbett’s volleyball team had its run to the 3A volleyball title stopped one win short Saturday night after a 25-12, 25-18, 25-10 loss to Santiam Christian in the championship match.

The Cardinals appeared to be turning the tide when Karina Lees started finding holes in the Santiam wall to build a quick three-point advantage. Natalie Herge pounded a kill off a diving libero near the end line to put Corbett ahead 11-8 midway through the set, prompting the Eagles to call time out.

Santiam returned to the court and went on a 17-7 run to take the set.

The Eagles relied on a pair of 6-footers up front, Jessie Seumalo and Maddy Gravley, to dominate action up front most of the match.

“They have the biggest block we’ve seen all year, and that made it hard to get anything going,” Corbett coach Angela Davis said. “We tried to pick parts of the court that we could target, but it’s hard to sustain that kind of attack.”

The Cardinals were playing in their first finals since 1988.
