'We're going big - to heck with the bucket'

Group takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to a new level

Remember that group of people who performed random acts of kindness in local grocery stores during the holidays last year?

Well, they were at it again over the weekend.

Friends of the Practice Kindness movement took the ice bucket challenge for ALS Saturday, Aug. 23, at Olympic Gym in Gresham.

It was not an event suited for the faint of heart.

Using a picnic table as a launch pad, about 70 people took the plunge into a swimming pool filled with cold water and 4,100 pounds of ice. Gresham resident and Practice Kindness (PK) spokesman Dale Lovett was the first to brave the ice bath, answering a challenge PK received on Facebook.

“The Practice Kindness organization got called out and we’re going big,” Lovett said in the group’s YouTube video. “To heck with the bucket.” Photo Credit: OUTLOOK PHOTO: ANNE ENDICOTT - Gresham resident and Practice Kindness spokesperson Dale Lovett was the first to take the plunge into a swimming pool filled with cold water and 4,100 pounds of ice.

The group’s participants raised $400 for their paralyzingly cold submersion and issued a challenge to anyone who hasn’t donated or gotten wet, including President Barak Obama.
