For the groundbreaking ceremony for Clackamas County Bank's future Gresham location, Mother Nature bestowed a rare dry and relatively warm December morning.

Local businesspeople, members of the Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce, designers, construction workers and bank employees gathered Wednesday morning to kick off the construction phase of the two-story building at 1101 N.E. Burnside Road. The 8,400-square-foot facility will provide a permanent home for the Sandy-based bank's Gresham branch, which has operated for 20 years at the Gresham Village Plaza, 2482 S.E. Burnside Road.

"We're very excited," said Cathy Stuchlik, president and board chairwoman of Clackamas County Bank. "We are the oldest community bank in Oregon, and we're excited about being here in Gresham."

The new building, which will nearly double the bank's current space in Gresham, is designed to accommodate investment property and casualty services as well as regular banking. In addition to space for current and future staff, the location will accommodate a two-lane drive-through area including automatic and interactive teller machines along with a community room and kitchen that business and community groups can use for meetings and events.

"We will have everything here (including) life, health, property and casualty insurance," said Stuchlik, whose great grandfather founded the bank in 1911. "This will be our permanent home now. We own the dirt."

The facility was designed by Portland-based SUM Design Studio, and Bremik Construction is the general contractor.

Kandy Clark, an administrative officer who started at the Sandy location 40 years ago, said planning took awhile, but the wait for the project to begin was worth it.

"We wanted the right architect, the right contractor, the right design," she said. "This is the part where it all comes together, finally. It is exciting for us to have our own building."

If all goes according to schedule, the bank should be open by the end of 2019.

In addition to the Sandy headquarters and Gresham, Clackamas County Bank has branches in Boring and Hoodland.OUTLOOK PHOTO: SHANNON O.
