Portland man drowns near Troutdale


A Portland man, Birtha B. Subba, a native of Nepal, drowned while fishing in the Sandy River at Dabney State Park, just north of Troutdale around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office reported that Subba, 52, was fishing along the banks of the river upstream from the park with his brother-in-law when he decided to go further upstream and apparently struggled in the water and drowned. His brother-in-law was unable to help because he couldn't swim and Subba was not wearing a life jacket.

A Troutdale police officer gave Subba CPR on the riverbank and was assisted by an MCSO deputy. Corbett Fire Department responders continue lifesaving efforts but were unsuccessful.
