Gorsek leads in District 49 race

by: OUTLOOK PHOTO: JIM CLARK - Matt Wand talks with John Minnis at Wands election night party, following the initial election results showing Wand losing to opponent Chris Gorsek. As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, Democrat Chris Gorsek, the challenger in the race for House District 49, leads incumbent Rep. Matthew Wand with 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent, as votes continue to be counted.

With the race too early to call, Gorsek was remaining cautiously optimistic.

“It's still early but it's certainly going in a good direction for our campaign and we're very pleased with what's happened so far,” he said. “We ran a strong campaign and I'm proud of everyone who's hard work helped in this race.”

Gorsek controlled 7,131 of the 13,327 total votes cast as of 9 p.m. in Multnomah County.

When asked why he thought he held an early lead, Gorsek said it was his campaign's ability to speak individually to voters and listen to the issues important to them.

“I was able to reach out to voters one-on-one,” he said. “We had lots of people going door-to-door and speak personally to voters about their concerns and what they believe really matters. We talked to people and listened to their concerns and it's paying off in the results we're seeing so far.”
