BROUGHT TO YOU BY RANDY PRESTON - HONKE HEATING - HEATING AND COOLING INSIDER - - Brought to you by Randy Preston - Honke Heating - HEATING AND COOLING INSIDER - There are a few different problems that could cause your HVAC system to freeze. The coil on the air-conditioning/ heat pump system needs proper air flow to keep the coil from freezing.

Dirty air filters can contribute to air flow problems, which can cause your coil to freeze up. Change or clean your washable air filter.

However, you may have a broken fan. Even if your air filters are clean, there is no fan to effectively push the air through the system.

You're Leaking Refrigerant: If airflow isn't the problem, it's possible that there's a refrigerant leak. A leak can cause the coil to freeze up. You should contact a contractor to repair or replace your AC/heat pump system.

What to Do When Your AC/Heat Pump Unit Freezes Up?

Here are the steps you can take to unfreeze an air conditioner, before you call for service. It cannot be repaired while it is still frozen.

Shut the unit off

Find and clean up any water damage

Wait for the unit to defrost and the ice to melt (Never chip off the ice as you could damage essential components)

After an hour (possibly more), run just the fan to get some air flowing through the system

Check the air filters to ensure they're not in need of replacing

Now that you have done the above, turn your cooling system on to see if you have air coming out of the vents and if the air is cool. If you do not have air or cool air, call Honke Heating and Air Conditioning for repair service.
