Brought to you by Dan Schofield - Weston Kia - AUTO REPAIR INSIDER - Prep your vehicle for winter

WESTON KIA - Dan SchofieldIn Oregon, our first cold snap can happen at any time. Don't get yourself stuck on the road – or spinning around on it - in a vehicle unprepared for winter.

Take your vehicle to a reputable shop and make sure it's checked for the following winter basics:

Engine coolant doesn't just keep your engine from overheating – it also protects your engine from corrosion. Every vehicle requires a certain ratio of coolant to water. Your repair technician will know that ratio, as well as what type of coolant to use.

Have your oil checked to ensure you have the proper type for the changing weather outside. During the winter months, when temperatures get below freezing, your mechanic may advise switching to a thinner, less viscous oil.

Battery - Don't let a dead battery put a screeching halt to your day. A thorough inspection of your battery, cables, terminals and fluid will head off problems and make sure your car is ready for winter. The shop will check the age and strength (amount of voltage) left in your battery and find out whether it needs replacement.

Tires – What type will you need for the terrain and conditions you'll be driving through - whether it's snow, sleet or ice? Should you drive all-season tires or invest in snow tires? If you choose snow tires, most car manufacturers recommend changing all four to snow tires in the winter.

Plan ahead now to make your winter holidays a lot more enjoyable!
