Crafty Fox offering crafty classes

Youth can learn to sew and knit

Washington County 4-H is sponsoring a free sewing and knitting learning day for youth Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Washington Street Conference Center, 225 S. First Ave. in Hillsboro.

There will be projects for both complete beginners and those with some sewing experience.

Bring sewing machine and supplies to class. Kids in sixth-grade and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Take a sweetheart to the dance

Visitation Catholic School will host its fifth annual Sweetheart Dance Saturday, Feb. 8, as a fundraiser.

The Lake Oswego Millennium Dance Band (pictured above), a 17-piece live band with vocalist, will play Big Band-era songs from the 1930s to 1960s including hits from Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Barry Manilow and more.

There will be food, snacks, drinks, beer and wine available for purchase.

There will also be an open gym available for children. Donations will be accepted.

The dance is for adults 21 and older and held at Visitation Parish Center, 4189 N.W. Visitation Road in Forest Grove, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Tickets are $12 a person at the door and $10 a person in advance. Purchase tickets at vcsknights.org.

Artists: apply for public art program

The city of Hillsboro Public Art Program is giving artists the chance to apply to become part of Hillsboro’s public art collection.

Each year, the city purchases works that depict the characteristic landscape, city views, people and places of Hillsboro for the city’s collection.

The purchased works are displayed in the Civic Center Auditorium. Archival prints are presented as the official city gift to dignitaries and business leaders from around the world.

Purchase prices cannot be more than $500. Applications can be found at Hillsboro-oregon.gov and are due Feb. 13.

Come out and join Pacific’s orchestra

Community members are invited to join Pacific Philharmonic — a full symphony orchestra at Pacific University made up of faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students and community members.

Rehearsals are every Wednesday from 7 to 10 p.m. starting Jan. 29 in Taylor-Meade on Pacific’s Forest Grove campus.

Their spring concert is tentatively scheduled at 6 p.m. May 4.

The spring 2014 repertoire includes John Williams’ “Superman March,” Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” and Felix Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64” (Movement I) with faculty soloist Adam LaMotte.

The group is most in need of strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), bassoon, oboe, French horn and percussion.
