Deputies investigate gunshots in Cornelius

Deputies with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) were called to a Cornelius apartment complex at 11:40 a.m. Thursday, July 31, by citizens who reported multiple gunshots and two men running westbound.

Multiple police units responded to the scene of the shooting, which took place in the 900 block of North Davis Street.

Two men were apprehended in the WalMart parking lot six blocks to the west of the apartment complex.

One of the men was arrested for an earlier, unrelated charge of illegal weapon possession and the other man was released after questioning.

Deputies have the name of a third individual allegedly involved. While investigations are ongoing, deputies hope that this third person, once located, will help explain what happened.

“It’s a convoluted situation, so we need to contact this third subject to get a picture of what occurred,” said Sgt. Bob Ray, spokesman for the WCSO.

Law enforcement officers are unsure what started the incident or how the men were involved.

“We don’t think it was a random act,” said Ray. “There was some sort of conflict going on.”

There were no injuries or property damage as a result of the shooting.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help regarding the case. If you have information, contact the Cornelius Police Department at 603-629-0111.
