APRIL IS ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH
This April, during Alcohol Awareness Month, the providers
at Maple Street Clinic encourage you to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of excessive alcohol
consumption.
There may be an issue if the answer is yes to one or more of
these questions:
• Are there times when you are unable to stop drinking once
you have started?
• Does it take more drinks than before to get "high?"
• Do you feel a strong urge to drink?
• Do you change your plans so that you can have a drink?
• Do you ever drink in the morning to relieve the shakes?
• Do you experience tremors, night sweats, or mood disturbances in the absence of alcohol?
• Has your drinking ever caused you problems with your family, work (or school) performance, or accidents/ injuries?
Excessive alcohol consumption increases risk of injury, violence, drowning, and health problems – including liver disease, and some types of cancer. Alcohol consumption should
be limited to no more than 1 drink a day for women or 2 drinks a day for men. (Note: A standard drink is l2 grams of pure alcohol, which is equal to one l2-ounce bottle of beer or wine cooler, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or l.5 ounces of distilled spirits.) Abstinence of alcohol is advised if you believe you have
developed a dependence, are pregnant or trying to conceive,
or have a contraindicated medical condition or medication.
If you are in need of assistance to stop drinking, please contact
your medical provider.
