by: ISABEL GAUTSCHI - Jonathan Frakes is directing the third episode of 'The Librarians.' He observes from the director's chair in the Estacada Public Library on Monday, May 19. Frakes is renowned for his role as Cmdr. Riker in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation.'Jonathan Frakes bounds about the set stirring up ever bigger reactions from the costumed extras.

Frakes is directing the third episode of TNT’s new Electric Entertainment series “The Librarians.”

With his big smile and warm demeanor, Frakes — who played Commander William T. Riker in “Star Trek: The Next Generation" — keeps cracking up the crew.

Between takes, lights are adjusted, footage reviewed, Rebecca Romijn checks her phone, Christian Kane spins his prop axe.

The Estacada Public Library has been turned into a full-fledged TV set.

Though the swell of makeup artists, camera operators, sound editors and production assistants streaming through the library aisles on Monday, May 16, seems huge, Electric Entertainment Partner Rachel Olschan says it’s a pretty typical size for a TV crew.

All included, the crew is nearly 200 strong, and nearly all of the crewmembers are local to the Portland metropolitan area.

In late April, the show filmed in Milo McIver State Park.

“We love shooting in your community!” Olschan said and cited Oregon's filming incentives for part of the reason the area is so attractive.

Scenes also will be shot on Main Street on Tuesday, May 20, and Old Mill Saloon Wednesday, May 21.

Though plot details are highly guarded, Olschan, acknowledged the saloon will be “blown down."

According to a press release, “The Librarians” returns to the world of “The Librarian” movie trilogy and “centers on an ancient organization hidden beneath the Metropolitan Public Library dedicated to protecting an unknowing world from the secret, magical reality hidden all around.”

The series follows this group as it “solves impossible mysteries, fights supernatural threats and recovers powerful artifacts from around the world.”

In the series, the library has recruited four people to aid Flynn with his duties.

Wyle, Dean Devlin, John Rogers and Marc Roskin are the series’ executive producers.

TNT has ordered 10 episodes of “The Librarians” and plans to launch the series in late 2014.
