Making it new

Simpson transforms former Bargain Depot into River Market & Deli

by: ESTACADA NEWS PHOTO: ISABEL GAUTSCHI - Owner Zack Simpson is ecstatic about River Market & Deli. You’ve probably noticed the former Bargain Depot has transformed into River Market & Deli.

Owner Zack Simpson may have some big changes in mind, but he also has a respect for the space’s history.

Of course he does, it’s his history too.

Simpson’s parents, Bud and Cyndi, have been doing business in Estacada for at least a decade.

For a time they had a dollar store in downtown Estacada, then they opened the Bargain Depot on Highway 224.

Simpson, a class of 2007 Estacada High School graduate, says he has grown up in the space.

“I know all the people pretty well that are coming in,” he said.

So when his parents were ready for a change, it was only natural that Simpson should open his own business in this very spot.

The Estacada Bargain Depot closed its doors at the end of December.

In the intervening months, Simpson and his partner, Raymond Anderson, “put every dime they had” into the space before holding a grand opening March 19.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the River Market & Deli was held Monday, April 7.

Though inflation presents many challenges for selling food at a discount, Simpson said customers will still find inexpensive food.

“That will be the spirit of Bargain Depot that lives on,” he said.

Former Bargain Depot customers will find the same types of products, many just come from new vendors.

One of the biggest changes is that there is no longer a consignment shop in the back of the store.

The space is destined to become a full-service deli.

The goal is to have it open by this summer.

Simpson plans to serve healthy sandwiches (with gluten-free options), soups made from scratch, hot foods, breakfast available all day and desserts.

The now empty dessert case will display Cyndi’s award-winning fudge.

Simpson said his mother will be back almost full-time once the deli is up and running.

Once the business has obtained an OLCC license, it will offer beer, wine and cider.

A walk-in cooler has been installed in the garage for that purpose.

Another big change is that the market will sell tobacco products.

Throughout the interview, Simpson credits Anderson, his parents and friends for making it possible to get the place up and running.

Simpson said several Estacada business owners have offered valuable advice throughout the process of opening the business.

“We’ve been incredibly lucky,” he said.

River Market & Deli is at 214 S.E. Highway 224.

It’s open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
