UPDATE: Alleged murderer's son arrested on Thursday

Former Glastone police Sgt. Lynn Edward Benton was arrested Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in connection with the May 28, 2011, death of Debbie Lee Higbee-Benton in Gladstone.

On Nov. 7, members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task force and investigators from the Oregon City Police Department and Oregon State Police arrested the 50-year-old in Portland.

Susan Campbell turned herself in on the alleged murder-for-hire plot last year. Around 1:30 pm, in a Gladstone traffic stop on Thursday, police arrested Campbell's biological son Jason Jay Jaynes, 32, on a warrant for one count of attempted aggravated murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony in connection with the murder.

This investigation began when Benton reportedly discovered the body of his spouse in her beauty salon. At that time, Lynn Edward Benton was a sergeant with the Gladstone Police Department.

When the body was discovered, members of the Clackamas County Major Crime Team responded to the scene to initiate an investigation. The Clackamas County Major Crime Team is comprised of investigators from every law enforcement agency in Clackamas County including the Canby Police Department, Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Clackamas County District Attorney's Office, Gladstone Police Department, Lake Oswego Police Department, Milwaukie Police Department, Molalla Police Department, Oregon City Police Department, Oregon State Police, Sandy Police Department, West Linn Police Department and Tualatin Police Department.

On Nov. 2, a Clackamas County Circuit Court judge issued a warrant for the arrest of Benton. He will be booked into the Multnomah County Jail and then transferred to the Clackamas County Jail for arraignment.

“We hope the family and friends of Debbie Higbee find some solace that this tragic crime and the resulting investigation has continued to move forward,” said Gladstone Police Chief Jim Pryde. “We are appreciative of the efforts of the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team and the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office.”
