Longtime coach Jack Dunn adds his own lessons to his mentors'
by: , DUNN

Former Portland State baseball coach Jack Dunn will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame next January, but at the moment he's more excited about getting into print another way.

Dunn has written a book geared to coaches, 'From the Third Base Coach's Box.' It will be available soon at

It's 300 pages and features a foreword by Dale Murphy, the former star outfielder for the Atlanta Braves who played for Dunn at Wilson High and on the powerful Watco Electric American Legion team that finished third in the nation in 1973.

'I wrote down just the things I did coaching,' Dunn says, adding: 'If that doesn't screw you up, nothing will. It'll put you in a lifetime slump.'

The book is largely a compilation of articles Dunn has written for magazines over the past five years. Rich Burk, play-by-play broadcaster for the Portland Beavers, did the graphics 'and did a magnificent job,' Dunn says.

Dunn says he simply followed the instruction of two mentors, former prep and Legion coach Wade Williams and a former Detroit Tiger scouting supervisor, Bernie DeViveiros.

'Wade Williams was probably 30 years ahead of his time,' Dunn says. 'When I got into coaching, he would critique all my games. He always said, 'Take what I give you, improve on it and pass it on.' Bernie signed Mickey Lolich. He was a genius. He'd come see me a lot when I was coaching. He always told me, 'Don't let this stuff die.'

'The book has a lot of strategies and drills. There are chapters on strategy, the hit and run, the safety squeeze, slap bunts, a simple way for the second baseman to make the double play and so forth.'

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony, meanwhile, will take place during the ABCA convention Jan. 2 through Jan. 5, 2009, in San Diego.

Dunn coached 20 years at PSU and never had a losing season. His clubs won 630 games. He helped develop pros Jeff Lahti, Eric Gunderson and the late Steve Olin. He came to the Vikings in 1975, after 14 years at Cleveland High, where he coached Tom Trebelhorn, who went on to manage in the major leagues, and five years with Wilson.

Dunn was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
